Powerbase Energy Systems Inc. designs, manufactures and markets automation control systems for small hydro power generation systems, typically under 20 MW. The Powerbase Platform offers a low-cost, modular approach to powerhouse automation, providing a unique and complete control system from water to wire.
Typical protection and control devices for hydro power generation systems use generic programmable logic controllers (PLCs), or combine control components from several manufacturers. Either approach requires considerable system integration, and hardware/software engineering costs. The cost of developing the software for a PLC based system often exceeds the costs of the actual control units. The Powerbase Platform includes modules designed specifically to meet the requirements of high voltage (5kV/15kV class) generation systems.
Powerbase provides equipment for small hydro power generation. Our products are based on decades of design and engineering experience in embedded controls. Located in Carleton Place Ontario, near one of the main high tech hubs in North America, Powerbase has benefited from many of the available technology resources. Our partners include companies involved in small hydro, local turbine manufacturers, Natural Resources Canada and independent power producers. These partners allow Powerbase to design and test the next generation of application specific, embedded controller based, small hydro controls and protection packages.
The company provides a high degree of vertical integration and controls (in house) as well as most aspects of the engineering and production tasks. This includes software, design of printed circuit boards, mechanical assemblies and wiring harnesses. This high level of integration provides a higher degree of quality control and improves our ability to respond to the customer’s needs. In addition, the design team continues to refine and expand the product to offer cost effective solutions to the customer. The Powerbase Platform has already garnered wide acclaim from one of the most challenging small hydro markets in the world; China. We have provided over 60 control and protection systems to China and demonstrated our philosophy of a simple to operate, low cost, flexible system. Powerbase equipment controls 75Mw of power generation in more than half a dozen countries. Powerbase is already looking to expand in new markets through strategic partnerships and agreements. With firm goals in mind, Powerbase is intent on becoming an industry standard for small hydro plants everywhere.
